The Plot Diagram is an organizational tool focusing on a pyramid or triangular shape, which is used to map the events in a story. This mapping of plot structure allows readers and writers to visualize the key features of stories. The basic triangle-shaped plot structure, representing the beginning, middle, and end of a story, was described by Aristotle. Gustav Freytag modified Aristotle’s system by adding a rising action and a falling action to the structure. This interactive version of the graphic organizer supports both Aristotle’s and Freytag’s conceptualizations of plot structures. A plot diagram is a tool that is commonly used to organize a story into certain segments. Once the parts of the plot diagram are identified, it is easier to analyse the content. A plot diagram also gives a common framework for analysing and understanding written prose. Usually Plot Diagram includes the following – exposition, rising action, climax, falling, resolution. The exposition or the introduction introduces the characters, describes the setting and establishes the problem in the story. The rising action is where the suspense builds and the problem gets worse and becomes more complicated. There are often multiple steps or parts in the rising action. The climax is the turning point in the story. It is usually the most exciting part in the story and the part that makes the reader want to keep reading. The falling action is the events that happen after the climax that lead to a resolution or ending to the story. The resolution is the outcome of the story. It is how things end up or turn out for the characters. Each sample template is designed to help you structure your story and they include comprehensive information about each section, helping you understand how a particular type of story narrative works. They are, however, merely a guide and should not be rigidly adhered to. Creativity is far more important than sticking to a formula but they can help you pace your story and troubleshoot rewrites.
